Steve Marnoch teaches Design Master Class to 'A' Rated Netherlands Golf Professionals - 2010 Steve Marnoch, Director of golfmarnoch Limited International Golf Course Architects gave a really successful Design Master Class to 26 of the A Rated Netherlands PGA Professionals as part of their training schedule. Menno Pelk one of the resident professionals at Heelsum Golf Course where Steve Marnoch has renovated the 27 hole course, asked if Steve would like to give the design school and Steve was delighted to oblige. The session lasted all day and involved a PowerPoint presentation detailing the Evolution of Golf Course Design discussing the main design trends through the ages from Penal, Strategic, Heroic and the now Contemporary Style which has a mix of all the design trends. Students also picked up the top design principles from some of the great Golf Architects including Alister Mackenzie, Harry S. Colt and John Lowe. As part of the day the students were asked to design a hole using the information they had learnt on the day and a prize of a Bottle of Auchentoshan Scotch Malt Whisky was won by Elles van der Meij from Golfbaan Spaarnwoude for the best design. The students were asked about who they thought were the best golf architects and what they thought made a great golf course the answers were interesting in that virtually all the professionals did not consider (or really enjoy) courses which were too long and stated that reachable par fours were a great part of a golf course layout interesting to learn from players who can hit the ball a long way! Students also viewed some of the recently reconstructed holes at Heelsum and hit some balls along the way whilst discussing the design strategies. Heelsum Golf Club has been selected by the R & A as a great example of Biodiveristy and the course is also featured on the GEO website. Florus Josten one of the A students said "great masterclass, one of the best so far". Pelk from Heelsum GC said "It gave us a new insight on how golf courses are built and a view from the architect's eye. I am sure we'll benefit from this day in the future". Steve Marnoch stated that he thoroughly enjoyed the day finding it extremely rewarding.
